Where to find German and Swiss Foods in Northern Virginia Stores

Growing up in Switzerland you are not only enjoying beautiful views like the above, one also gets used to the best chocolate ever. There are many things I very much miss from back home, most of course my family. Whenever I feel home sick I visit the following stores to get some comfort European Food:

Recently Mueller Yogurt got lunched in the US and I regularly go to one of the local Giants here in Woodbridge to buy this really great yogurt. It comes close to what I am was used to growing up, but I still miss the Migros Chocolate Quark. Wish I could get this here.

Being from Switzerland I am crazy about all kind of cheese, especially Raclette and Fondue. Last year I discovered fairly reasonably priced Raclette cheese like I am used to (already pre-cut) at Trader Joe's. I wish there was a Trader Joe's here in Woodbridge Virginia, I really love that store. Note the cheese in the below picture is not the cheese from Trader Joe's. You can also get Raclette cheese at Wegmans in Woodbridge or at Harris Teeter. Yummy too, but they don't sell it pre-cut.

My husband doesn't get the fun of Raclette and he is not as much of a cheese fanatic, that's why the last time I was back in Switzerland I found this little Raclette grill, it is very easy to work. It actually uses candles. Anyway, if you are interested in getting this one person Raclette grill here in Northern Virginia you should check out The Swiss Bakery. The other day I had lunch at The Swiss Bakery and saw they are selling the exact same model at their store.

This brings me to my next favorite place The Swiss Bakery. I love to go there, they even sell Rivella and every now and then they have Zweifel Chips among many other really great items. I love their Biberli or their Basler Leckerli.

There are of course many more stores where you get German / Swiss goodies. Anyone that has access to the Commmissary on the Bases is very lucky. They have great prices and you can get lots of German items.

Also Aldi with it's two stores here in Woodbridge has great stuff. They have German week I believe every other month or even once a month. Over the holidays I always get the Domino Cubs they are selling. At Wegmans I always find Kinderschokolade. Lol, I shouldn't be eating that but I love it.

At Tivoli in Rosslyn or Ballston you get the best truffles and pralines, they are imported by Albert Uster (Maryland Company) directly from Laederach in Switzerland. Now there is a story to that, my parents live very close to the Laederach Factory and their Factory Store. At the factory store we always get the best chocolate at the lowest prices. Just thinking about it makes me home sick.

I personally have not been to the Heidelberg Bakery but have had their Broetchen before and they are very good. I normally get my Laugenbroetchen or Pretzels from the Wegmans here in Woodbridge.

I am sure I have left out many stores but the once that I am mentioned are my personal favorites and also the closest for me. I welcome any feedback or suggestions.

I live and work in Woodbridge Virginia and service all of Woodbridge Virginia and surrounding area.
